Information Wanted / Michael SULLIVAN b: (1817-1830) Ireland
« Last post by llpiatt on August 25, 2014, 04:33:38 PM »
I am in Search of information on Michael SULLIVAN and Julia CONNOR.

They first appear in Worcester County in Fitchburg were there is a listing for the birth of Margaret SULLIVAN in 1854.  They later moved to Marlborough then Northborough.

Michael SULLIVAN died 25 Jul 1884 in Northborough and was buried in Westborough.

Julia (Connor) SULLIVAN died 27 Sep 1887 in Northborough and is believed to be buried in Westborough as well.

Information available on Michael SULLIVAN is that he was born anywhere between 1817 and 1830, depending on the record.

My question is: Is there anyone who knows what Catholic church(s) they may have attended and do they still have records on these old families?  I am highly interested in locating their marriage record, which would have taken place 1854 or earlier and where they came from.

Thanks in advance,
Lance

Information Wanted / Re: Corner store = Spa

If you lived in Worcester, well into the 1960's, you knew of a local neighborhood spa.
They were the then 7-11's, a place to get a newspaper, cigarettes, loaf of bread, etc.
Our local spa on West street also had a back room with a phone to take racing bets, and you could also pick 3 numbers before there was a State Loto.

My Mom used to bet with a bookie who had his unofficial office in a spa somewhere near Chandler @ Park Ave IIRC. She had me pick two # for the daily double when I was 11 and we won $26.00 That was a lot of money to me back then (1963.)

The Whistler mans  name was Walter Barch. He could walk backwards and hold a conversation with you while he was walking.. But he had to keep moving.. I believe he was from the Bell Hill neighborhood. I even saw him walking along route 9 around Breezy Bend in the Leicester, Spencer area. You are right about him being a piece of Worcester's history. I also remember he always wore a sign on his back with his name on it..I'm trying to pick my brain and a few others who also knew him.  Thanks for the memory of the Whistler, Walter Barch.
Follow up.. His remaining years were at the  Belmont Home. I have been told he is buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Otis Air Base. Walter was a WWII Veteran. Thank you Walter from all those Worcester residents who loved to hear you whistle. "TheFox"

My friend Walter Barch, a top boxer in Massachusetts, used to train with me. Well...when I was drafted, and Walter enlisted, everything changed.

I left Worcester in 1970 and remember the many corner "spa".
Do people still call them a "spa"?
It's A word that has changed, much like the words "frap" and "tonic" which you got at the local "spa".
Should someone want to talk with a 71 year old about Worcester, send me an email.

My mother and father taught at West Boylston St school. My father, Raymond Cavanaugh, was the principal in the late 1960's and my mother, Helen (Fennessy) Cavanaugh was the art teacher. They are still married (they celebrated their 59th anniversary on July 3, 2014)and still live in Worcester. My mother remembers Miss Schneiderman. She said she thinks Miss Schneiderman taught a sex Ed class to some of the students. She said she was "one of a kind".  My mother and father both remember teachers and many students from their teaching days at West Boylston Street school.

Worcester History / Worcester's Silver Mine Location
« Last post by r0nd0 on July 20, 2014, 03:36:37 AM »
Does anyone know the location of an alledged silver mine in Worcester during the 1700's and is there any evidence that it existed still visible today?
I know the early description: "The spot is easily found. Follow the Nashua Railroad north on foot from its crossing on Mill Brook till you pass the 2 mile post. The deserted shaft is about 20 rods to the northeast of this spot. It is readily found, as a pile of slate and stones still lie there where they were thrown out by the miners on a slight eminence in the meadow."
Where is this in terms of today's landscape??
Thanks
