Information Wanted / Re: Corner store = Spa
« Last post by theblackprince on January 09, 2014, 10:50:02 AM »
I was born in Worcester and lived there 34 years. First address was 3 Garfield Street which was a short dirt road off Cambridge St. near Millbury Street.  The street was taken by public domain and destroyed during the construction of I-290.

My parents bought a house on Isabella Street which was part of a development begun in the 1890's called Columbus Park (part of the 400th anniversary of Columbus "discovery" of America craze) and included other streets called Columbus, Ferdinand, Lisbon and Genoa. At the intersection of Maywood, Lovell, Englewood and Ferdinand sat the "Columbus Park Spa". It was run by a local family and was a great place with groceries, penny candy, ice cream and a soda fountain. It lasted many years until the local juvenile delinquents made it too much of a pain to continue.

We must have grown up in the same area. Add to your list: O'Connors Spa at the corner of Pleasant St. and Park Ave and Peter's Spa at the corner of Abbott and Pleasant st.

Information Wanted / Corner store = Spa
« Last post by Prosperos Daughter on December 24, 2013, 06:49:37 PM »
Does Worcester still have any corner stores referred to as a spa? When I lived Worcester (52-76) there were small grocery store/soda fountain places on about every corner. There was Blossom Spa at Russell & Pleasant, Walt's Spa at Sever & Pleasant, Russell Spa on Russell between Pleasant and Elm. They were every where.

Worcester Chit Chat / Browns Beach Jacket Company
« Last post by Worcgirl on December 08, 2013, 07:53:36 AM »
Hi all,
I was raised in Worcester and I'm trying to write a blog on the Browns Beach Jacket company. They made mens work and outdoors wear from around the turn of the century to the later 1960s. In the 50s I think they changed ownership and opened another factory in Woonsocket R.I. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Worcester Swedish Genealogy/History / Looking for infor on Charles A Peterson
« Last post by Germac on November 30, 2013, 11:38:58 AM »
If someone has a Genealogybank account, I would appreciate it if someone could look up the marriage and/or death info of Charles A Peterson and his wife, Sarah Lyons. C. Peterson was a 33rd degree mason and based on the info from the Grand lodge (MA) he was born in Sweden in 1880 and was mason in the Worcester lodge (Athlestan/Montecute/Guiding lights). I was thinking he was born circa 1850. Furthermore, I thought he was from the Boston area and not Worcester, but he could have lived in the Worcester area briefly.  I can find two references of him, one being mentioned as the father of the birth of Martha Charlotte Peterson on 6/25/1877.  The other reference is that he was present over the marriage of his other daughter, Annie L Peterson (my great grandmother) on 6/24/1894 in Boston.  Any information that can help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Worcester History / What happened to Jamesville Pond?
« Last post by PCTECHPLUS on November 20, 2013, 11:30:50 AM »
Hi All,

I was looking for any information regarding Jamesville Pond.  While browsing some old maps of my former neighborhood (Jamesville), I noticed there was once a "Jamesville Pond" located behind the old Wright Wire building across from Ty Cobb baseball field.  Kettle brook still runs through the dead pond.

I attempted to research this long gone pond and I cannot find any info on when it was drained.  It shows up in maps as late as 1939.  I lived in the area during the 70's-80's and I never heard anything about it.

Any info or pics of the actual pond would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
