I've been compiling a family history book to pass down to my kids someday and have found some wonderful info on my italian relatives such as when they came to America, date, year,  name of the ship they traveled on...once I had that I googled the ship name and was able to find facts and photos of the ships, etc.... Here are the resources that I used:

www.archives.gov     National Archives Branch in Waltham (you can find it online)

www.ancestry.com   (all government records from manifests, to War registration cards, marriage, deaths, births

www.ellisiland.org  (ship manifests\imigration info)
