When Sheila Harrity was in the second grade, she played on the boys’ basketball team at Midland Street School. On May 16, the former Doherty High three-sport standout will enter the Worcester Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame along with 10 former male players and two coaches.

Harrity played field hockey and softball for the Highlanders from 1979-83, but basketball was her best sport, leading Bob McNamara’s team to the Inter-High title and Central Mass. championship game as a senior. She went on to star at Providence College.

Joining Harrity in the second Hall of Fame class are Marty O’Brien (Class of 1937), Ralph Raymond (’42) and Michael Mazzola (’57) of Commerce, Frank Scavone Sr. (’39) and John Ricciardi (’47) of Boys Trade, Andrew Murch (’69) of Doherty, Bob Vartanian (’69) of North, Michael Bradley (’97) of Burncoat, Jim Murphy (’78) of South and Pat Phenix (’78) of Voke.

Former Boys Trade baseball and football coach Francis Donaher and Commerce and Doherty track coach John Wallace will also be inducted, while Gabe Simon will receive the Outstanding Contributor to Sports and Athletics Award.
