Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
« on: May 30, 2006, 06:21:26 AM »
My name is George Maple, I just want to post information for those with Civil War Vet lineage or interest.
I am currently the Camp Commander of Willie Grout Camp 25 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.  This is an organization whose main purpose is to honor the memories of those who fought to preserve this country in the Civil War.  To be a full member, you need to have an ancestor who fought for the Union, be 14 or over and male.  We are in the process of reorganizing our Auxiliary, which is for the womenfolk.
We meet at the armory on Skyline Drive the 4th Monday every month from September to June.
If you think you have lineage, we can assist with the research.
Some activities we participate in:
Water Ceremony at Elm Park on Memorial Sunday
Ceremony at Hope Cemetery on Memorial Day
We clean up the GAR plot at Hope.
We assist in flagging veteran's graves.
We march in the Columbus Day Parade.
We presented the Colors before a Tornadoes game, and will be again this season.
We are working on identifying and locating 'missing' Civil War vet graves at St. John's and Hope.

If you are interested or would like to have us perform a ceremony at your Civil War ancestor's grave, please email me at gmaplejr@charter.net
