Book "Prendergast Letters"
« on: November 03, 2010, 02:03:55 AM »
Have been reading this book.  It's letters from Milltown Kerry to family in Boston during the 1840s-1850s.  Very interesting and readable.  What I got from it so far
People went to Tralee & Killarney often enough to pick up the mail.
How important $ sent home was.
Sons could travel out of their area to work.
The familiar name for Julia was Judy or Jude!
People hired scriveners to write their letters.
Love this and suggest you read it if you also have kerry ancestors.

I'm going to read through this book again.  One poignant thing I leaned was that in Milltown Co. Kerry and perhaps even in other parts of ireland.  People were denied some of the relief efforts if they had family living in the USA.  It must have been assumed that money was being sent home.
