You may want to try
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/main.htm?rc=locale%7E&us=0
Not sure if they were issued SS#'s back then, but it's a great database.

I just started searching for my family history. I found my grandfather's social security card while going thru a bunch of old papers, but I just don't have the money to pour into these geneology websites. Anything free out there????

Hi,
For records(birth, death, marriage) prior to 1910 you can write to : Massachusetts Archives
220 Morrissey Blvd.Boston MA 02125 $3.00
SASE pay to commonwealth of MA
after 1910 you can write to the dept of vital records $28.but it is probably cheaper to write to the city or town clerk in which the event occurred.
good luck in your searches.

Re: "free' sites: rootswweb.com, ellisisland.org
Also visit the regional National Archive (NARA), one is in Pittsfield and one in Waltham. Also, I've had great results at the State Libraries at Boston, MA and Hartford, CT-free access to microfilms, and computer internet access to Ancestry.com.
The Registry in Dorchester, Mass. as well as the Mass. Archives at Columbia Point, Boston (both are near the JFK Library).
